PTSI’s Behind-the-Wheel Training Curriculum was created to meet the initial training needs for school bus drivers. This training program uses a teaching concept that combines classroom instruction, hands-on practice on the bus in a safe, closed course environment and on the road time to cement the learning process. As an added benefit, this training design allows the Trainer to feel more secure in the driving abilities of this trainee, before entering a live traffic environment. Many training programs lack the classroom training component in initial driver training. New trainees may feel overwhelmed when first introduced to the school bus, a rather intimidating, large vehicle. This program discourages taking a new trainee out behind the wheel, driving in a live traffic environment on the first day of training; rather, encourages the Trainer to give trainees a more rounded training experience by allowing the Trainee to see, hear and do – an extremely effective teaching technique. This training program has the potential to help an operation reduce incidents and collisions plaguing new drivers in that first and second year.
